Be A Mentor!

Making a Difference One Life at a Time

Our Mission

Mentoring is one of  the foremost areas of focus in Choosing to Excel's program components.  Three million young people are reported to be in formal one-on-one mentoring relationships today, a six-fold increase from just a decade ago.

Youth development experts agree that mentoring is a critical component in any child's social and emotional development.  It builds self-esteem, self-confidence and competency, boosts academic performance, and broadens horizons.  Mentored youth are far less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, skip school or resort to violence; they are likely to do better in school and have better relationships with their parents and peers.

C2E’s mentoring model is inclusive of all youth and families providing a variety of mentoring opportunities in diverse settings: in-school, community-base, parenting (including teen and single parenting), mentoring for children with parents who are incarcerated, youth in juvenile detention, and alternative school settings.  In the 2009-2010 school year 110 students were given a mentor through our program, and since inception in 1994 we have matched over 2,000 cases in our community.

The mentoring commitment requires a minimum of one hour a week for one year.  Meetings occur on school property during school hours, and under the supervision of C2E and participating school officials; and C2E provides continual training, support and assittance during the entire mentoring process.  Corporate and private funders can invest in this program through grants, donations, and employee partnerships.

Unfortunately many young people and families are forced to wait to be matched with mentors due to a lack of resources needed to expand our capacity.

The mentor/mentee relationship is one that can be incredibly fruitful to both parties if handled properly.  As you can see, below we have seperated the duration of the relationship into 5 stages.  Please click on any stage to get information on what to expect.  Remember that C2E is here!  We want to hear about your triumphs and the progress being made during your time together.  Please contact us:  Program Director, Carolyn Greer at 501.730.0205 or CLICK HERE to send an email.

Mentoring Children of Incarcerated Parents is at the forefront of our focus.

C2E's mentoring program has grown since the beginning, nearly 20 years ago. Students and youth are identified in our community and referred by school officials, non-profit organizations, and even the incarcerated parents in central Arkansas.  Each student is matched with a trained and certified mentor skilled in dealing with these unique needs.  Mentors meet with their mentees at least once a week for a year committment.

For more information on this exciting new service, to recommend students, or to express wishes to become a mentor please click here to visit our MCP site.
