I'm not sure where to start...from my side it seems like we have just both gotten to know each other and now have a very relaxed and easy relationship.
Gosh, he was a wee baby when I first met him! We started to meet when he was in the fifth grade. He was always a very respectful and mature fellw; now (ten years later) he is much more so and we can actually have conversations. (We talk alot about cars and car repairs.)
It is interesting to get to know someone well as a child, watch them grow from a distance. It is especially rewarding to get to do that with someone to whom I am not related. We talk about his plans, dreams, aspirations, his work experiences, and his first car. Fortunately, we do not talk much about girls (I have tried to steer him straight in this regard but only occasionally.)
It is hard to put into words what I have gleaned from this experience. (It is that way with my own kids too!) I guess one has a sense of a rather priviledged position. It is an honor to get to be there and have some kind of influence upon another life. It is also a frightening responsibility. This latter issue is what forces me to be a better person. I have to have a GOOD influence upon him.
